Alumni Teach and Mentor Students in Rural South Africa

The Acornhoek Physics Summer School (APSS) is an annual 3-week program aimed at grade 11 learners, run during December and January holidays. During the program learners are introduced to grade 12 maths and science so that when they start their last year of school leading to the South African National Certificate, they are already aware of the contents. The program is run by students who attended the previous year. Its aim is to develop a sustainable model that addresses the challenges faced by many students, mostly in rural areas, in mathematics and science and create interest in science through astronomy and digitisation of education.

The project hosted a workshop for grade 8 and 9 teachers in April 2022. And started science clubs for grade 8 and 9 students. APSS have also launched a mentorship program where the program alumni are mentoring students. They are planning the final event of the year, a 3-week summer school for grade 11 students from 05-24 December 2022. The school will introduce students to grade 12 content in physics and mathematics, with an astronomy component to inspire them.
