Big Data School and Hackathon, Kenya

DARA Big Data, in conjunction with TU Kenya, IAU OAD and IDIA, are organising a 5 day Big Data School and Hackathon event. It will be held 26-30 July on campus at the Technical University of Kenya in Nairobi.

The event will feature 2 days of programming, data science and machine learning tutorials, followed by a 3 day hackathon where participants can develop their skills further and compete in teams of 4 for prizes. Hackathon topics will cover astronomy (searching for pulsars) and sentiment analysis (using COVID19 Twitter data).

Each day will run approximately from 9am to 5pm; participants MUST be able to get to and from TU Kenya during the week and MUST commit to attending each day in full. Catering will be provided. Social distancing, mask wearing and other safety measures must be observed on campus to keep tutors and participants safe. Masks and hand sanitiser will be provided.

Women in particular are encouraged to apply to take part as women are under-represented in the data science field. This event will be a safe and supportive environment for all and several tutors will be present throughout to provide guidance to participants.

To take part in this event you will need to have at least a basic knowledge of Python. There is no charge to take part in this event however there are very limited places available and demand is expected to be high. A selection process will be used to award places; you will be notified by the end of June if you have been given a place or not.

Applications are now CLOSED. The first 2 days of the event (26-27 July) will be livestreamed. If you are interested in watching the tutorials and presentations of the Big Data Kenya event, please fill in the form below (managed by DARA Big Data) and details will be sent to you nearer the time. In addition, the hackathon project material will be sent to you so you may go through in your own time and build up your skills.
