APPLICATION FOR ASTRONOMY WORKSHOP FOR SCIENCE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN NIGERIA 2017

The Director/Chief Executive of the NASRDA-Centre for Basic Space Science, (CBSS), Prof. Fidelix, E. Opara has passed away after a brief illness.  As a result, the HBSST Workshop is postponed for the two centres and a new date will be communicated as soon as possible.

Hands on Basic Space Science Training for Primary and Secondary School Teachers (HBSST) is a workshop designed to promote astronomy appreciation for primary schools and junior secondary school science teachers in Nigeria and to bring the basic observational tools of Astronomy and space science closer to them. This is a 3-day workshop which will cover Teachers from all Primary and Secondary School Nigeria, featuring talks, hands on activities, demonstrations, Water rocket building and launching, Construction of small optical Telescopes using locally made materials, observation using a small optical telescope, Eclipse and Solar system model making, planetarium, Solarscope, Experiments and demonstrations using Universe in a Box apparatus, group work and innovation as well as public outreach. These teacher hands on training will aim at upgrading the skills, teaching tools and aids of these teachers, equipping them with innovative and simple method of teaching and learning. The teachers will also be trained to use Basic Space Sciences activities as a teaching tool for their subject’s concepts. The course material will include Astronomy based activities and hands on science/astronomy using locally available material.

Duration of workshop: 3-Days

Eligibility: Must be a teacher in Any Primary/Secondary School in Nigeria.
Nationality: Only Nigerians Level of study: PhD, MPhil, MSc, BSc, BEng, BEd, HND, NCE, OND, WASSC

Target Subjects: All subjects

Schools/Colleges: Open to all Primary and Secondary Schools in Nigeria

N/B: 1. Two workshop venue had been created in Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Department of Physics (Rivers State) and Centre for Basic Space Science Department of Radio and Optical Astronomy (Enugu State) respectively.

  1. Only Science teachers teaching in any private or government primary or secondary school are eligible to apply.
  2. The event will hold in two venues of the country, Nsukka in Enugu State, from the 20th to the 22nd  of April, 2017 and Port-Harcourt in Rivers State, from the 23rd to the 25th of April, 2017 respectively.

Applications are currently open for the 2017 workshop year. Applications should be submitted online by 12 noon on Friday 06th April 2017.
