The Office of Astronomy for Development is a joint project of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) with the support of the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI).
Changing lives through astronomy
We work with community groups, non-profits, astronomers and other researchers, education and outreach specialists, and other experts around the world. Whether it is changing student attitudes to STEM through the exciting lens of astronomy or creating opportunities for rural entrepreneurs through astro-tourism, we believe astronomy can have a positive impact due to its deep cultural ties, its hold over popular imagination, and its natural affinity to multi-disciplinary work.
What we do
The IAU OAD is a global coordinating centre of Science for Development. We support scientists, young people, and passionate changemakers from around the world to engage in astronomy to promote sustainable development. Within our ecosystem, we
- Develop openly accessible resources
- Offer free online courses, lowering barriers to become a changemaker
- Nurture global communities of practice
- Provide grants and technical support for astronomy-for-development interventions around the globe
